Hi there! When setting up the artwork, is it possible to have the print go over the cut line area? I want to have the artwork go all the way to the edge without showing the acrylic border. Thanks a lot!!
Hey! So there’s been a lot of interest in fullbleed charms lately, I want to preface this with: be well aware of the potential issues and risks involved! There is a possibility that where the cut intersects the printing it will damage and discolor the print as well as compromise the structural integrity of the ink, making it more likely to chip/flake at that edge in the future. Of course, anyone is welcome to experiment and we’re happy to print fullbleed if specifically requested!
Not all acrylics are equal (cast vs extruded) and different materials respond differently to being cut. (Ex. full bleed with our glitter acrylics is a no-go). In our experience, fullbleed works best with our frosted and wood materials!
In the case of clear acrylic, fullbleed works nicely with translucency effects with no white ink placed underneath, and you can tint the color of the clear acrylic as desired. But, the white ink is thicker, as are darker colors - so a standard A/W/B print all the way to the edge carries a greater risk of issues. For clear fullbleed with heavy printing all the way to the edge, I’d recommend placing a smaller order and seeing how you feel about the result and whether compromising the durability of the ink is personally worth it to you for the sake of the design. (The print on our standard clear acrylic charms where the cut does not intersect the print is very durable - the ink is bonded to the acrylic!)
When setting up a file for fullbleed, you’ll want to:
- Provide a bleed for the artwork, meaning you’ll want to extend your artwork beyond the border of your cut silhouette. (Keep in mind that the loop/hole will become additional material, so no need to extend your artwork onto the loops!)
- Be aware when designing your cut silhouette that the cut path will shear off a small bit of the material and printing along the border.
- Make a note when placing your order to clarify your intent!
Fullbleed opens up lots of possibilities, it’s been exciting to see everyone’s designs!!
